More about Makhulu
Makhulu is nurturing and loves spending time telling stories to her grandchildren. She also loves gardening and cooking for the family, and there is rarely a visit to her house that does not include a fresh batch of something on the stove or a new seedling to check on in the garden.
Storytelling is where Makhulu is most at home. She has a story ready for almost any occasion, whether it is one passed down from her own grandmother or one she makes up on the spot to explain why the sky turns orange at sunset. Anda and Langa know that a visit to Makhulu almost always ends with them curled up beside her, listening closely as she speaks.
Her garden is another kind of classroom. Makhulu grows vegetables and herbs the way her family has for generations, and she is always ready to show Anda and Langa how to plant a seed, pull a weed, or pick something ripe enough to eat. In the kitchen, she does the same with cooking, letting little hands stir, measure and taste along the way.
Makhulu carries the family's history in the small things she does every day, from the proverbs she repeats to the recipes she never quite writes down. For Anda and Langa, time with Makhulu means slowing down, listening well, and learning that some of the best lessons come from the people who love you most.
