More about Tatomkhulu

Tatomkhulu lifting Langa into the air

Tatomkhulu is practical, patient and happiest when he is fixing, sorting or explaining how something works. He brings a quiet, hands on kind of wisdom to Anda's family, the sort that comes from years of doing things properly and taking the time to do them right.

Give him a squeaky hinge, a wobbly chair or a tangled piece of string, and he will work through it calmly, narrating each step as he goes. He is not in a rush to finish. He would rather Anda and Langa understand how something works than simply watch him fix it for them.

He keeps a shed full of tools, where he is always restoring old cars that Anda and Langa love to watch. He is happy to let them help, even when helping slows him down. Sorting nails by size, holding a torch steady, or naming the tools he asks for become small lessons dressed up as chores, and Tatomkhulu never seems to mind repeating himself for the sake of getting it right.

Tatomkhulu's patience is its own kind of teaching. He shows Anda and Langa that most problems can be solved if you slow down, look closely and try again, and that there is real satisfaction in fixing something with your own two hands rather than replacing it.
